EV-D68 is a non-polio respiratory virus that can cause mild cold-like symptoms or severe breathing illness. It can also trigger severe wheezing and breathing difficulties, particularly in infants, teenagers, and children with asthma. In rare cases, it is linked to acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), a serious neurological condition causing muscle weakness and paralysis. This disease spreads through close contact, respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, and contaminated surfaces. There is no specific vaccine or antiviral medication. Management relies on supportive care and treating respiratory symptoms.
